"Living with the effects of someone else’s drinking is too devastating for most people to bear without help.
In Al-Anon we learn individuals are not responsible for another person’s disease or recovery from it. We let go of our obsession with another’s behavior and begin to lead happier and more manageable lives, lives with dignity and rights; lives guided by a Power greater than ourselves. In Al-Anon we learn individuals are not responsible for another person’s disease or recovery from it."
Detachment (S19)
Al-Anon offers various tools for recovery, including the Serenity Prayer, which helps individuals accept what they cannot change, and slogans that encourage living one day at a time. Members also benefit from sharing experiences in meetings and conventions, working the steps with the support of a sponsor, participating in service and utilizing Al-Anon literature to gain insights and support.
Al-Anon has three sets of guiding principles that are referred to as our Three Legacies. These legacies were adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous:
Recovery through the Twelve Steps
Unity through the Twelve Traditions
Service through the Twelve Concepts of Service
God, grant me the serenity,
To accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.
While interacting with other members of the fellowship, you get to listen to them share their experience strength and hope (ESH). By which we mean: sharing how they were affected by the disease of alcoholism, how they have used the tools of the program to change their lives, and what changes (at times miraculous) were made possible by working the program. There are several ways to have access to the fellowship's wealth of ESH:
Read it using our conference approved literature. You can get it here.
Build trust attending meetings regularly. Find a meeting here.
Immerse yourself in recovery at a convention. Find one here.
Interact with other members while doing service. Find out more about it here.
Talk with fellows in between meetings.
Work the steps with a sponsor, whom is a more experienced member that supports your journey to make the program work in your life.
Slogans are small pieces of wisdom that can assist members to use the program in their everyday life or to navigate difficult periods:
One Day at a Time
Just for today
Think
Let Go and Let God
Easy Does It
Listen and Learn
Together We Can Make It
First Things First
Live and Let Live
Keep It Simple
Progress, Not Perfection
How Important Is It?
Keep An Open Mind
But for the Grace of God
Let It Begin With Me
